An African Goddess: Naomi Campbell
Ultra-svelte, supergoddess Naomi Campbell was born to a Jamaican dancer mother and unknown father in London, UK in May of 1970, and began her modeling career at the age of 15 when she was discovered visiting a local, London shopping mall. The first black woman to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine at 18, and the first black model ever to appear on the cover of Time magazine – this beautiful woman became an instant celebrity known for her red-hot temper and big brown eyes. Aside from modelling, Campbell has been a successful actress, entrepreneur, humanitarian, singer, and parfumier.
Before becoming a model, Campbell attended Dunraven School and the London Academy for Performing Arts as a child. She eventually began to study at the Italia Conti Academy school and appeared in several music videos in the early 1990’s.
Known for her extremely long legs and ferocious attitude on the catwalk, Campbell quickly caught the eye of fashion mavens such as, Ralph Lauren and Francois Nars. Known for her free spirit and sexuality, Campbell also appeared nude in Playboy magazine and was featured in pop-singer Madonna’s risqué book “Sex”.
One her of most successful ventures outside of modelling has been her singing career. Particularly popular in Japan and South Korea, Campbell sold several million records thanks to her smash-hit, “Love and Tears”. In the US, her debut album “Baby Woman” sold over 1 million copies. Even with so much success, after this release, Campbell never pursued her singing career with as much vigor.
At one point, Campbell was bitten by the acting bug and began to appear in several Hollywood productions. Crime dramas such as, “Cool As Ice” and “Miami Rhapsody” showcased her onscreen presence and lead to her being included in the A-list of Hollywood’s celebrities during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.
While modelling, singing, and acting – Naomi Campbell learned a thing or two about big business and started her own company, “NC Connect” and released her own line of celebrity perfumes. She was one of the earliest, modern celebrities to use her notoriety to propel her name into the households of millions of consumers worldwide.
Campbell’s love life has been something of a storybook fantasy. She has been linked to celebrities ranging from boxer Mike Tyson, actor Rober De Niro, singer Usher, and several other high-profile beaus. She is currently dating and not married.
Today, Campbell, now in her mid-forties, spends her time working with various charities and attending celebrity events. Even in middle-age, Campbell is showing no signs of slowing down.
